Work and Process
Painting from a photo. Process of turning a Pencil drawing into an Oil Painting
A drawing of my youngest son and only daughter. My boy is always put to bed in his own room but wakes up someplace else every morning. I loved drawing it. I started drawing it as I usually start my paintings, in my truck. I show up to work about an hour early and work on my art. This drawing took about three of those mornings and about 5 hours on Saturday.
After the pencil drawing was complete, I painted a water-based sealer over it which allowed me to paint over it with oil paints. I love the look of this technique. I can use oil paints as a gaze which adds color without taking away from the pencil work in the places I want it to show through. By sealing the drawing, it also makes the surface easy to paint on, as paper is very porous and would dry out the paint to quickly
For fun, I asked my facebook friends if they saw any images and i tried to include them when i went back in to bring out images
Sign Restoration Project
Having grown up in Highland Lakes, Sherief wanted his children to have the same fun and adventurous childhood he had experienced. He bought a home on the lake in town affording his children the best summer experience possible. Once Sherief herd that the old Highland Lakes signs were available for auction, he had to have one. They were old, pitted, pealing, and splitting. Thats why he called me, to fix it up and set it in his backyard facing the lake. Giving the rest of the lake community the ability to appreciate this nostalgic sign
When I first looked at it, there was moss and liken all over it, and the wood had a raised grain to it as the softer wood had worn away over years of rain. I scraped it and belt sanded it down to get a flat smooth surface again.
WOOD SPLITS and CRACKS
Epoxy
Since there were cracks in the boards running in from the ends the boards, I wanted to strengthen them. So, I took painters tape and put it underneath the crack then filled the cracks in with the epoxy. After it dried, I sanded it down smooth again. Some of the epoxy flowed into the lettering, which i was able to rerout again once dry.
Primed It
Painted in the Town COLORS
I added a crazy acrylic background to a watercolor portrait I made. And I'm planning on going back in and drawing images I see in my imagination.
I started this project as i often do. First a pencil sketch from in my truck before work
Then I experimented a little and used colored pencil
Finally, I went over everything with oils paints
